PRP Therapy - What is PRP and where is it used?
PRP stands for "Platelet Rich Plasma". Platelet-rich plasma is concentrated blood plasma that is obtained from the patient's own blood during PRP therapy.
The blood plasma has a yellowish color, the red blood cells are separated from the plasma with the help of centrifugation.
Blood platelets are referred to as thrombocytes in the medical field, so PRP therapy is also referred to as treatment with thrombocyte-rich plasma, but more popularly also as plasma treatment, plasma therapy, autologous blood therapy, stem cell therapy or, when used on the face for medical-aesthetic purposes, also as vampire lifting.
PRP contains growth factors and proteins.
What are the growth factors in PRP?
The so-called growth factors are one of the basic factors for the effectiveness of PRP therapy, they stimulate the cell growth of connective tissue cells, promote collagen production and ensure the formation of new vessels.
There are the following growth factors that help in cell renewal:
TGF-beta (Transforming Growth Factor) promotes cell growth and the formation of new blood vessels.
PDGF-AB (platelet-derived growth factor) stimulates cell growth.
bFGF (Fibroblast Growth Factor) stimulates the fibroblasts, which are responsible for the production of collagen, among other things.
IGF (insulin-like growth factor) promotes collagen synthesis, cell proliferation (i.e. cell division and cell growth) and fibroblast migration.
VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor) stimulates endothelial cell proliferation and migration.
EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor) promotes angiogenesis, regulates extracellular matrix regeneration and stimulates fibroblast migration and regeneration.
How is platelet-rich plasma obtained?
To obtain PRP for plasma treatment, only a very small amount of blood is taken, about 10 to 20 ml, from which about 7 to 14 ml of blood plasma are then obtained.

Due to the centrifugal force, the solid - i.e. the red and white blood cells - separate from the liquid parts of the blood - the platelet-rich plasma. The extraction of the PRP is thus achieved solely by physical forces, no foreign substances are added to the plasma. How does PRP therapy work?
After the blood has been taken and centrifuged to prepare the PRP, it is injected into the tissue or subcutaneous fatty tissue using a fine needle, depending on the area of application. In PRP therapy for skin tightening and wrinkle treatment, PRP therapy can be combined with needling.
How often does the plasma treatment have to be carried out?
Depending on the area of application and the initial situation, this can vary. As a rule, however, you should initially expect a monthly plasma treatment. The growth factors are the driving force behind the regeneration processes in PRP therapy. They act like little commanders who control the healing powers of the body. Much like wound healing, the injection of PRP signals the body that new cells are needed at the site in question.

The appearance of scars (surgical scars, acne scars) and stretch marks can also be improved with PRP therapy.
Weaknesses and bumps in the connective tissue can in some cases be successfully improved with PRP.

Cost of autohemotherapy
The costs of PRP therapy depend heavily on the scope and area of application. However, since there are no costs for inpatient stay, anesthesia or extensive follow-up treatment with autohemotherapy, the costs of PRP therapy are of course significantly lower than for plastic surgery, for example. In which cases is plasma treatment with PRP not suitable?
Autohemotherapy cannot be used in patients with circulatory or blood clotting disorders, acute or chronic infectious diseases or blood disorders (e.g. HIV, hepatitis), tumors or severe neurodermatitis or severe psoriasis in the treatment area.
We also do not carry out any treatment with PRP during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Not because the treatment itself would be harmful, but because it is necessary to numb the area to be treated and all types of medication should be avoided during this period.
Patients with active herpes infections should also temporarily avoid plasma treatment. We advise the same if you have or have recently had cancer.
